Description

Learn to reduce risk and make your classes safer. You'll explore areas of prevention, surveillance, response and rescue, emergency care, and personal safety—all specifically created for the unique risks present while leading others in water exercise, fitness, or therapy sessions. This course is recommended for safety training for AEA, ATRI, and Arthritis Foundation instructors and anyone who conducts water programs.

Objectives

Prevention Module
1.1 Identify hazards and risks in a pool environment and during class
1.2 Identify a four-step process for deciding how to manage hazards and reduce risks
1.3 Identify strategies for reducing risks of the environment including:
    1.3a Recognize severe weather and when to remove participants from the water
    1.3b Describe how to use electrical equipment safely near the water
    1.3c Recognize the dangers of poor water or indoor air quality
1.4 Identify strategies for reducing risks of participation including:
    1.4a Describe methods of safer entry and exit
    1.4b Describe methods to screen participants for water confidence and balance instability
    1.4c Describe how to self-rescue from a face-down (prone) and face-up (supine) position
    1.4d Describe methods for making deep water safer for participants
 
Surveillance Module
2.1 Comprehend the importance of surveillance during class
2.2 Understand the difference between distress and drowning
2.3 Recognize signs of distress, drowning or a health emergency in the water
2.4 Comprehend the importance of time in an emergency and how quickly drowning can occur
 
Response and Rescue Module
3.1 Describe how to use flotation for a reaching quick-assist
3.2 Recognize the need for an effective emergency communication device
3.3 Describe how to identify your role in a facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
3.4 Describe three methods of basic non-swimming rescue techniques
3.5 Identify when to suspect a spinal injury and what to do until EMS arrives
3.6 Identify when to call EMS
 
Emergency Care Module
4.1 Review basic first aid for a person who is ill or has an altered mental state
4.2 Review basic first aid for a person who is injured
4.3 Review care (CPR) for a person who suddenly collapses and is not breathing
4.4 Review the importance of rescue breathing and CPR for a drowning victim
 
Personal Safety Module
5.1 List strategies for reducing the risk of injury while teaching
5.2 List strategies for reducing the risk of illness or health concerns while teaching
